Why the cuticle decides everything downstream
Each strand is sheathed in overlapping scales that point from root to tip. Lay two strands against each other in opposite directions and the scales interlock — that is matting, at a microscopic level. Keeping direction through collection, sorting, washing, drawing and construction is slow, skilled, wasteful work.
The industrial shortcut is to remove the problem instead of the disorder: an acid bath dissolves the cuticle so nothing can interlock, and a silicone coating restores the slip and shine the stripping removed.
What that hair does on a real head
In the packet it is excellent — smooth, glossy, uniform. Through the first few washes the coating holds. As the silicone washes off, the stripped cortex is exposed: the hair goes dry and dull, absorbs product unevenly, refuses to hold a tone, and starts matting at the nape where friction is highest.
This typically shows between wash six and wash ten, which is roughly the point where the client returns and blames the install rather than the hair.
The two tests, no equipment needed
The clarify test: wash a sample once with a strong clarifying shampoo. If the feel changes dramatically — from silk to straw — you have just removed a coating that was doing the work.
The ten-wash test: wash and brush a weighed length ten times over a fortnight, assessing tangle, shed, shine and colour drift each time. Full-cuticle hair behaves at wash ten roughly as it did at wash one. This costs an afternoon and settles the question permanently.
What we do differently, and what it costs us
Direction is preserved by hand at the sorting and hackling tables, reversed and short material is pulled out on the line, and no coating is applied at any stage. That means we lose weight we have already paid for, and our hair sometimes feels slightly less slippery in the packet than coated hair does.
That is the honest trade. We would rather lose a comparison in the hand and win the one at wash ten, because the second comparison is the one your client makes.
Buyer Questions
Is all inexpensive hair acid-bathed?
No, and price alone is not a reliable signal. The clarify test and the ten-wash test are, and both can be run on any sample before a bulk order.
Can I tell by looking at it?
Not reliably. A silicone coating makes stripped hair look better than full-cuticle hair in the packet. The difference only appears after the coating is washed off.
Does full-cuticle mean virgin?
No. Full-cuticle hair can be coloured. Virgin describes chemical history; cuticle status and direction describe structure.
