The definition, precisely
Human hair is covered in overlapping cuticle scales that point from root to tip. When two strands are laid tip-to-root against each other, the scales interlock and the hair mats. Remy hair is hair that has been collected and kept in alignment so this never happens.
Two conditions must both hold. First, directional integrity: root ends stay with root ends throughout collection, sorting, hackling, washing and construction. Second, cuticle integrity: the cuticle has not been stripped by an acid bath, which is the shortcut used to stop non-aligned hair from tangling.
Why alignment is expensive to preserve
Alignment is destroyed by handling, not by nature. Every stage after collection is an opportunity to lose it — a sorter who flips a section, a wash tank that agitates loose hair, a drawing table that reverses a handful, a weft line that feeds hair from both ends. Preserving direction means slower work, more skilled labour, and more rejected material.
This is why genuinely Remy production costs more per kilogram than the same weight of hair processed at speed. A supplier quoting Remy at commercial-hair pricing is telling you something about their process whether they intend to or not.
What Remy does not mean
Remy does not mean virgin. Remy hair can be bleached, toned and coloured — most professional extension hair is. Virgin means chemically unprocessed; Remy describes direction and cuticle. A product can be Remy and coloured, virgin and non-Remy, or any combination.
Remy does not mean single donor. A Remy bundle may be built from many donors, all aligned in the same direction. Single donor is a separate specification that also controls texture and shade consistency.
Remy does not mean machine-wefted. Construction method describes how the hair is assembled into a product; it says nothing about the state of the hair going in.
How we specify it
Every RemyPatra specification states three things independently: origin and collection category, cuticle and direction status, and chemical processing history. A buyer should never have to infer one from another.
Where a lot is not fully cuticle-aligned Remy, we say so and price it as what it is. The commercial category exists and is useful; misrepresenting it is what damages a salon's reorder confidence.
Buyer Questions
Is all Remy hair virgin hair?
No. Remy describes cuticle direction and intactness. Virgin describes the absence of chemical processing. Most professional coloured extension hair is Remy but not virgin.
Can Remy hair still tangle?
Yes, if it is under-conditioned, over-bleached or installed with heavy silicone coating. Alignment removes the structural cause of matting; it does not remove the effects of aggressive processing.
How can I verify a supplier's Remy claim?
Wash a sample five to ten times without silicone-heavy conditioner and watch the mid-lengths. Aligned, cuticle-intact hair stays separated; acid-stripped or mixed-direction hair begins to knot at the same point on the shaft.
