The three minimums
Per-colour MOQ is the smallest quantity a production run can economically make in one shade and length. Colour development has a fixed cost, so this is where the real constraint sits. Per-order MOQ is the total across all shades — it exists to make shipping, documentation and inspection worth running. Per-programme MOQ applies to private label, where packaging and branding carry their own setup.
RemyPatra works to 300g per shade, 1kg total minimum — 1kg total per order, and 10kg to open a private-label programme. Those numbers exist so a new salon or small brand can carry a real shade range instead of betting an entire budget on one colour.
Why a low headline MOQ can still be expensive
A supplier quoting 100g minimums is usually reselling from stock rather than producing. You pay a stock margin, and you inherit whatever the original run was — including shade drift you cannot trace. Production minimums exist because production is real.
The question worth asking is not 'how small can I order' but 'what happens when I reorder this exact shade in four months'. A supplier with a lot record can answer. A stock reseller usually cannot.
How to plan your first order
Pick three to four shades your clients actually book — usually a natural base, one mid-brown, one lifted level and one blended blonde. Take 300g of each rather than 1kg of one. Add lengths only after the shade range is proven.
Keep the first order small enough to test and large enough to be representative. A 2kg first order across four shades tells you more than a 5kg order in one.
