Start narrow and prove the range
The biggest first-range mistake is launching with too many shades. Four to six well-chosen colours in two lengths, proven over three reorders, beats twenty shades that sit in dead stock. Pick shades your target salons actually book — usually a natural base, a mid-brown, a lifted level and one blended blonde.
Rooted and melted shades sell strongly but carry more production variables. Launch one or two once your solids are proven, not before.
What 10kg actually buys you
10kg is the point at which custom packaging, labelling and retained shade references stop being uneconomic for both sides. At that volume you get your logo on the pack, your shade codes, hang tags and a spec insert, plus a lot record that follows every future batch.
Below 10kg, buy wholesale under your salon name first. There is no shame in proving demand before you commit to a brand line.
Cashflow and calendar
Treat the first run as a project, not a purchase. Budget for reference approval, swatch couriers, pack prototype, production, freight, duty and initial stock. Ask for each stage dated in writing on the quote.
Plan reorders at 60% stock depletion. A reorder placed at zero stock forces a rush, and rushed colour development is where quality is lost.
Why the manufacturer matters more than the logo
Your brand carries the complaint if a lot fails. The manufacturer that can show you the sorting table, the retained reference and the lot record is the one who can fix a problem instead of disappearing behind an email chain. Choose the partner before you finalise the artwork.
